Backpack day at Woodlawn, NW Portland

Woodlawn United Methodist Church in NW Portland is the home of the Portland Backpack program that we have been in partnership for the past two years. On January 16 you are welcome to come join other youth and adults who support this program as well as spend a few minutes remembering the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

On January 7th the PMC MYF and JR HIGH Youth and bunch of adult leaders (a group of 27) all climbed into cars and headed up to Ski Bowl for a day in the snow. We spent most of out time on an upper hill where the crowds were thinner and the “tubing police” were a little more forgiving. After an attempt at a snowball fight which consisted of trying to stand next to Jen Bishop (Pregnant women are a forbidden target)… the group made their way down the mountain where we preceded to totally overwhelm a poor Subway shop.

Thanks for to all the leaders who came along and provided transportation. It was a fun day!

3:30 Return to PMC parking lot for parent pick up.

Cost:

20.00/per person (Sponsors are covered by MYF Budget)

Jr High Club @ PMC

JR High Club has met twice now and has been a very cool addition to our other fun events. Felicia Corbett, who is relatively new to PMC, has been offering leadership to these nights and has quickly become one of the gang!

Last night she had the table and kitchen counter covered with random photographs and asked us to pick out pictures that depicted our present relationship with God as well as our future hopes. We also picked out a picture to represent our fears. It was very meaningful to hear the honest answers around the table.

The Jr High crew is a great bunch this year with lots of energy and leadership potential. One way they plan to use their gifts this year is in facilitating the Backpack program at PMC. They will be making announcements and taking care of packing the food we collect into lunches to be distributed through the Program in schools here in North East Portland.

I hope you can find ways to support them and help with this vital program.

All of us know people who offer us windows into what an authentic follower of Jesus looks like, its one of those “feel it in your bones” kinda things right?. Well...guess what...we have lots of these people right in our own church! ...and Hey, they were 17 once upon a time...SO WHAT'S THE STORY?

During the next few months we (THE PMC MYF) are going to find out who these people are and we are going to get the STORY...

Jr High Lock-in takes in REAL LIFE Exhibit

The REAL. LIFE. Exhibit is a walk-through, multi-sensory exhibit that allows people to experience what REAL. LIFE. is like for children affected by disaster, conflict and poverty. The Jr High group toured the exhibit led by Marvin Friesen of PMC who volunteers at Medical Teams International.

While the evening had moments of heaviness there also was time for fun which included building a fort in one of the classrooms and an impromptu Christmas fashion show.

Hey…wanna help hand out flyers at Sat Market for Banyan Tree? Tim Fransen from Church is on the board (as are others from PMC) and below is a letter from him asking for volunteers.

Dear Banyan Tree volunteers,

The Banyan Tree Board of Directors has been busy working to implement the Spring Forward initiative with the goal of increasing traffic to the store and boosting sales. We are starting to put more and more of the ideas we've received into action, and we are ready to step up the campaign.
But we need your help! We are looking for volunteers to pass out a special flier with a 20% off coupon outside Saturday Market and in the vicinity of the store for the next few weeks. We have suggested some popular places, such as the Chinese Gardens and Voodoo Donuts, but we welcome your ideas as well. We would like to have two teams of two each to help out for a few hours. Below is a schedule of shifts we would like to fill, starting with this Saturday, April 16. Please let me or Lois know if you can help out. If you'd like to sign up with a friend who is not a volunteer, that is perfectly fine.

planning for Easter Breakfast THIS SUNDAY

Saturday morning APRIL 23

We gather in the church kitchen to prep all the food (the parents and kids need to be present for this) This usually goes from 9am to noon.

During this prep time (usually the the guys)

set up the tables,

put on tablecloths,

decorate the tables, (Jessie Hostetler will do this)

prep the drink table and

set up a donation table.

prep all the casseroles and each parent take (2-3) home.

EASTER MORNING

Each family Bakes the casseroles in their homes Sunday morning and bring them in piping hot – then we put them in the warming ovens to stay hot until needed.

PEOPLE ARRIVE / We begin serving (around 8:30 am)

The youth take the orders, serve the food and bus the tables

One youth stands by donation basket and greets people

WESTERN MENNONITE SCHOOL CHOIR MAY 1, 6:30 PM @ PMC

The Western Mennonite Choir will be giving a concert on Sunday night May 1 at PMC. I would be great to have the PMC MYF come out to help host them. We will order pizza after the concert for the choir…so come out and help serve pizza…and sneak a slice for yourself.

The Global Anabaptist Peacebuilders (GAP) Institute offers hands-on exposure to issues such as immigration, environment and peace. The GAP Institute requires teachers and learners alike to wrestle with the complexity of relief, development and justice issues in Central California and beyond.

Its Drift Creek summer camp sign-up time again! Most of you probably have the registration form that was put in mail boxes at church and have everything you need to get signed up (hopefully by May 1 to get the discount). If you do not have a brochure and registration form the WEBSITE AT DRIFT CREEK has lots of information including the forms you need to register!

I would encourage us to deal directly with DCC with registration issues...however, I will create a signup board in the church basement again to help us organize transportation / carpooling.

MYF Trip planned to Seattle

Mark your calendars for March 19-20. The MYF will be travelling to Seattle WA to enjoy the city as well as spend some time learning about our sister congregation in the Pacific Northwest Conference, Seattle Mennonite Church.

The plan as of now is to leave early on Saturday morning and drive to downtown Seattle where we will spend most of the day. By late afternoon we will travel to Seattle Mennonite Church where we will possibly meet some youth from SMC and eat dinner at a local restaurant near the church.

Seattle Mennonite has a great program called STOP DROP and ROLL which serves folks experiencing homelessness in their neighborhood. Part of our reason for visiting Seattle will be to learn more about this program.

We will sleep in the MYF room at the church and attend the Sunday morning church service before returning home.

Last night the PMC MYF kidnapped James Austin Lang from his home and promptly fed him fish and Chips @ Burgerville. A longtime feud about the presence of Will Smith in James’ favorite movie was also laid to rest. (Ask an MYFer!!)

Getting Ready for Convention…

It might seem far away but there are some things we need to do NOW to get ready for convention this summer. Here are two of them…

#1 Plan to attend the Parent Meeting on January 9 after church (we will meet in the church office space)

#2 MAKE A DECISION! If you are planning on attending the convention (July 4-9) you will need to decide before January 24. After this date we will have pretty much locked ourselves in concerning registration, rooms and meal plans. Making changes after Jan 24 is costly and has the potential to affect the whole group.

I will be sending out an email with more information prior to the meeting on Jan 9… so keep an eye out for it.

The Advent Workshop is fun for families and people of all ages. Come spend a Saturday morning (10 am—1 pm) smelling the smells of the season, eating Christmas cookies and MAKING THINGS WITH YOUR OWN HANDS. Forget about cheap plastic Christmas decorations and come spend time with a child creating an ornament or dipping a candle with a friend. Seriously, when is the last time you made a real live GINGERBREAD HOUSE?
Supplies are provided by the Children’s Christian Education Committee.

What about phones and music players?

You will be expected to place ALL technology (with an on/off switch) in a box during group conversations...however during free time you are welcome to text your friends as long as we are allowed to make fun of your relationship with your phone and you are welcome to listen to music at the risk that we will be talking behind your back... :)

Where are we staying?

We will be staying in a house owned and operated by Twin Rocks called HARBOR HOUSE directions to it are HERE.

What does it cost?

Normally we try to cover the cost of renting the house by dividing up this amount by the number of people going. The MYF fund is used to cover the cost of food and travel.

The cost of the house this year would come to about $30/per person. You are welcome to bring the $30.00 with you or hand it to me at church. If you don’t have $30.00 don’t sweat it!!!

What will we eat?

We cook all of our own meals. You will be placed on a Cooking team and a Clean-up team on Friday evening after we arrive. You will be expected to make a graceful transition into a dimension of the time space continuum where your MOTHER IS NOT PRESENT!!

What will we do?

If its raining REAL HARD we will play lots of games and stay cozy drinking tea and hot chocolate...but hopefully we can go for a walk up to Rockaway Beach for ice cream, play football and/or capture the flag on the beach, and just have a relaxing fun time. We will also take some time to talk together about our dreams for the future and about God’s dream for the world. (the attached pdf file might help you begin thinking about this)

THE PLAN:

Leave at 6 p.m. from church, Travel to Heidi Noordijk’s house (on Sauvie Island)

Heidi is a PROFESSIONAL FARMER and we will be eating some professional farmer soup at her house. (drive short distance to Maze) At 8 p.m. we enter the maze. Katherine Rush will take those who want to with her through the regular maze. The rest of us will go through the haunted one. Time permitting we will hang out and grab some hot chocolate at the snack bar when we are all through the maze. We will try to return to the church between 9:15 and 9:30 PM.

WHAT TO BRING:

Warm clothes
shoes/boots that can get muddy
A garbage bag for your muddy cloths and a clean set of cloths for the ride home. (Sponsors do NOT want mud in their cars!!!!)
MONEY (the cost for the maze is $9.00, You can give Curt the money at the maze.) If you can’t come up with the money please come anyway!!

MYF Lebanon Trip

Marianne, Grace, Luke, Laura and Curt spent a few days in Lebanon Or hanging out with Matt Yoder and Jonathan and Julie Fridley (Service Adventure Leaders in Albany).

The trip soon became known as the “Weekend of Freedom” which meant one was allowed to eat Capt Crunch at 10:30 pm with no immediate consequences.

We enjoyed a hike to Mary’s Peak (above) and managed to weed Matt’s lawn in between swimming, bowling and eating blackberry milkshakes.

Lebanon Oregon you say... What is in Lebanon Oregon?.... well there is a Mennonite Church there for starters, and a place called Micah House and a dude named Matt Yoder who lives at Micah House and Matt has invited us to come hang out for a few days.

The plan is to have a fun laid back time in the small town of Lebanon... probably we will help Matt do some projects around the house or in the community but mostly we will cook together, play games and... likely go bowling late at night since its right across the street...

The plan would be to leave after church on the 18th and come back on Tuesday afternoon. the lodging will be free but maybe we can take along a donation... that and food costs will be posted later...but I expect them to be minimal.

You really should plan on going!

PNMC YOUTH GATHERING/WORK WEEKEND at DRIFT CREEK (MAY 21-23)

This weekend event is connected to the over-all work weekend at DCC which will run from Friday night (May 21) till Saturday afternoon (May 22). Youth groups are invited to stay the extra night and leave Sunday morning (the 23rd). There will be games, a hotdog roost and a short gathering on Saturday evening as well as a short send off on Sunday morning down on the beach. I'm going (Curt, and hopefully another sponsor) and would love to have some of the MYF come with me/us.

I think it will be a fun weekend of doing service for the camp alongside other people including other youth from PNMC.

Reclusive member of the Manickam Singers to perform in PDX…

Sadly, The Manickam singers are no longer together but young Peter still performs regularly with a touring choir called Western Mennonite High School.

Western Mennonite High School's Choir will be performing at PMC on Monday evening at 7 PM.

Serious Manickam Singer fans have speculated for years that this tour could be Peter’s last in the Northwest and rumors of his retirement have been circulating for years. Mondays performance could be one of the last good chances to experience this singing phenom “live.”

On Easter Sunday (April 4) there is NO Sunday school…

…but the MYF and all the Jr High folks who will enter the MYF next year (and benefit from this fundraiser when we go to the Convention in Pittsburg in 2011) are asked to help with the MYF Easter Breakfast with food preparation and as servers. This meal REALLY helps the budget come convention time so please pitch in!!

Hi Friends,

I (along with some other youth pastors) received the following invitation to help pack Haiti Relief kits for MCC down in Canby at the "MCC Barn" from Bob Buxman....

"There will be a number of opportunities this week and next to help unload, pack relief kits at the barn. My preference is to work with a small group of about 4 youth max, plus yourselves. Will this work for your groups? And if so, what are your preferences? I could do some evenings, almost any night, plus Saturdays, Sunday afternoons. I'm thinking about 2 hours a slot. Give me two or three options that work for each of you and I'll try to fit each youth group [or part of a group] in at separate times. Talk to me."

I would love to help... I think this would be an excellent opportunity for a small group of us to go down (may 2-3 youth and 2-3 Adults) ... Its a wonderful hands on way to introduce kids to MCC and Christian Service by "doing something" together.

The Kidnapping of Peter Manickam

Last night a motley crew of hooligans traveled to Western Mennonite High school and kidnapped poor Peter right out of his dorm room… the video is forth coming!

The victim was promptly rushed to a local restaurant and forced to eat a rack of ribs before being SET FREE.

Tonight he is presumably resting peacefully with the left over cookies he stole after dessert in his room… which by the way Gale and Tim, was neat as a pin. (wink)

Packing Lunches at Woodlawn on MLK day

Thank you to those of you who made it to Wood Lawn United Methodist Church today to pack lunches with all the other groups involved with this local effort. Did I hear them announce we packed over 400 lunches? If so…that's great!

Marilyn Mauch, the coordinator for the Back Pack Program, was very pleased to have us show up and bring along our donations.

Thank you to EVERYONE who has been supporting this throughout the year by bringing food to church and supporting the Jr High kids! Today felt like we were truly helping our community live inside the Dream that MLK envisioned…if even in a small way.

Drift Creek Work Weekend is coming up…

If you haven't taken the time to flip through the Google calendar above you may need a reminder that on February 12-14 the Jr-High and the MYF will be heading to Drift Creek Camp to spend the weekend helping Drift Creek staff with projects and maintenance around the camp.

More details will be coming about travel and meeting times etc …but for now, please make sure this is on your calendar and PLEASE fill out the new 2010 RELEASE FORM before this event. A copy of the 2010-2011 form can also be downloaded from the column on the right at any time.

2010 Martin Luther King Workday & Remembrance

I want to invite any Jr-high youth and their parents to join me in attending an event on Monday, January 18 (MLK DAY) at the Woodlawn United Methodist Church in NE Portland. This event is a gathering for other youth groups and individuals who participate in the Back Pack Program and is also of course linked to the memory of Martin Luther King. From what I understand (this is my first time attending) we will join others in packing lunches together (I’m thinking I will take the food we have on hand) and then stay to listen to a brief presentation of one (of some) of MLF’s speeches.

I hope some of you can join me, but I realize this is late notice…

At the December 6 congregational meeting, the congregation passed a budget that included money for "renting" space down at Sunny Side United Methodist Church for the MYF and JR MYF to use. We owe our church family a big thank you for making this happen in what turned out to be a very hard budget year.
